Erika POVILONYTE

Erika Povilonytė was born in 1997 in Panevėžys, Lithuania. She attended evening music classes in her hometown and graduated with a specialisation in piano. With a diploma in painting from Panevėžys School of Art, she moved to France to continue her studies in National Fine Arts School of Dijon (ENSA). Upon receiving her Bachelor of Arts in 2019, she spent one semester as an exchange student at the Brera Accademy in Milan, Italy. There, Povilonytė’s artistic work was supervised by painters Luca Coser, Roberto Casiraghi and Marco Cingolani. The artistic collaboration with Canadian poet Denise Desautels has brought her visibility overseas. Thereby, since 2018 Erika Povilonytė is represented by female artists’ gallery Fatale Art based in Montreal. She has exhibited in Lithuania, France and Canada, including collective exhibitions “La Rivière sans Retour” at Interface Gallery (Dijon, France) and “We are Fatale” at the Livart (Montreal, Canada). In 2021, Erika Povilonytė has defended her artistic project and thesis entitled La Recherche du Merveilleux (fr. The Research of Marvellous) and graduated with a Master’s degree of ENSA Dijon. Now she lives and works in France and is part of a collective art studio La Volière. Erika’s works are about limits. About the border line between pain and beauty, burden and lightness, between brutality and subtlety. Inspired by archeology, poetry and music, Erika creates her own mythologies through abstract paintings. Especially interested in paper, she questions its possibilities and weaknesses by creating a sensitive skin for this fragile material. Her paintings, drawings and photos explore the sensation of marvellous and uncanny. |
